Our pets are family, and saying goodbye to a beloved companion can be one of the most difficult experiences we face. When a pet’s quality of life has declined and they are experiencing more suffering than comfort, euthanasia can be a compassionate final act of love. We offer expert pet end-of-life care in Orchard Park to help your family through this emotional time.
At Orchard Park Veterinary Medical Center, we understand how deeply personal this decision is. Our team is here to support you without judgment, answer your questions, and help you make the decision that feels right for you and your pet.
Knowing when it’s time to say goodbye isn’t always easy. Changes in mobility, appetite, comfort, energy, or your pet’s ability to enjoy the things they once loved can all be signs that their quality of life is changing.
If you’re struggling with this decision, our veterinary team can help you evaluate your pet’s current quality of life and talk through your options. You don’t have to make the decision alone.
If you decide that euthanasia is the kindest choice, we’ll take the time to explain what will happen and answer any questions you have beforehand.
Your pet’s comfort is our highest priority. An intravenous catheter is typically placed to allow the euthanasia medication to be administered smoothly. Depending on your pet’s needs, a mild sedative may be given first to help them relax.
The medication allows your pet to gently lose consciousness before their vital functions stop. The process is generally peaceful and painless. Occasionally, pets may experience involuntary movements, muscle twitching, or changes in breathing afterward. These are normal physical responses and do not indicate pain or distress.
You can choose whether you would like to be present with your pet throughout the process.
A Peaceful Space to Say Goodbye
We created our Rainbow Room specifically for quality-of-life conversations and end-of-life care. Rather than feeling like a typical hospital room, this private space is designed to feel warm, comfortable, and peaceful, with cozy furnishings and gentle lighting.
It’s a place where you can slow down, spend meaningful time together, and say goodbye in an environment that honors the special relationship you share with your pet.
Our support doesn’t end when your pet passes. We offer several aftercare options, including cremation with ashes returned, and our team can help you understand the choices available.
Our veterinary team and veterinary social worker are also available to provide guidance and emotional support during this difficult time.
There is no perfect way to say goodbye, and there is no need to rush through this difficult decision. When the time comes, Orchard Park Veterinary Medical Center is here to help you and your pet through it with compassion, dignity, and respect.
