Specialty & Emergency Care for Your Patients

Orchard Park Veterinary Medical Center partners with referring veterinarians to provide advanced diagnostics, specialty medicine, surgery, neurology, oncology, and emergency care for patients who need additional expertise. Our goal is to make the referral process straightforward while keeping you informed throughout your patient’s care. Once treatment is complete, patients are returned to their primary care veterinarian for ongoing care.

What to Send With Your Referral

To help our specialists prepare for your patient’s visit, please provide:

  • A complete referral letter
  • Relevant medical records
  • Recent blood work and laboratory results
  • Radiographs and other diagnostic imaging
  • Previous treatment information
  • Current medications
  • Any additional information relevant to the patient’s condition

Providing complete and up-to-date records helps our team make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary repeat testing whenever possible.

OPVMC Referral Portal

The rDVM Referral Portal gives referring veterinarians convenient, around-the-clock access to information about patients referred to OPVMC. The portal is available on computers, tablets, and mobile devices.

Through the portal, you can:

  • Submit new referrals
  • Upload medical records, laboratory results, and radiographs
  • View information about your referred patients
  • Access medical notes and diagnoses
  • Review laboratory results and prescriptions
  • View check-in and check-out information
  • Access attachments and other patient records
  • Receive updates according to your preferred communication method

The portal is designed to enhance communication between your practice and the OPVMC specialty and emergency teams. It does not replace direct communication by phone, email, or fax.

What to Expect After Referral

Once we receive the necessary referral information and records, our team will coordinate the patient’s specialty consultation or emergency care.

For scheduled specialty referrals, the patient will be evaluated by the appropriate department and a treatment plan will be developed based on their individual needs. Diagnostics or procedures are not necessarily performed on the same day as the consultation.

Our specialists will communicate findings and recommendations with the referring veterinarian, helping ensure continuity of care. Once specialty treatment has concluded, patients are expected to return to their primary veterinarian for continued care.
