When a pet develops a complicated or persistent health problem, finding the underlying cause can require specialized knowledge and advanced diagnostics. Orchard Park Veterinary Medical Center’s Internal Medicine team provides comprehensive care for dogs and cats with complex, chronic, or difficult-to-diagnose conditions.
Our internists work closely with primary care veterinarians, emergency clinicians, and other specialists to uncover the cause of illness and develop an individualized treatment plan. Whether your pet needs help managing a chronic condition or requires an advanced diagnostic workup, our goal is to provide answers while improving their comfort and quality of life.
With Dr. Kevin Kumrow and Dr. Melanie Hall, both Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (DACVIM), and Dr. Erin Toone, who completed residency training in internal medicine, our team brings extensive expertise to complex medical cases.
Our internists care for primary care referrals, specialty cases, and emergency patients.
Veterinary internal medicine encompasses many of the body’s major organ systems and disease processes. Our team provides expertise in areas including:
We diagnose and manage conditions affecting the heart, lungs, and chest. Advanced cardiac and respiratory diagnostics help our team investigate symptoms such as coughing, breathing difficulties, exercise intolerance, and heart murmurs.
Endocrine disorders can affect many aspects of your pet’s health. Our team manages conditions including diabetes, thyroid disorders, and adrenal diseases with individualized treatment and long-term monitoring.
Digestive problems can range from temporary stomach upset to complex chronic disease. We evaluate gastrointestinal conditions using laboratory testing, advanced imaging, and minimally invasive diagnostics such as endoscopy when appropriate.
Infectious diseases can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and other environmental exposures. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are important for helping your pet recover and preventing complications.
Our specialists diagnose and manage conditions affecting the kidneys and urinary tract, including disorders that cause changes in urination, increased thirst, kidney dysfunction, bladder problems, and other urinary symptoms.
Our internal medicine team works with other OPVMC specialists to evaluate and manage pets with cancer. Diagnostic testing helps determine the nature and extent of disease and guides treatment recommendations.
When heart disease is suspected, OPVMC offers several tools to evaluate your pet’s cardiovascular health. Echocardiography uses ultrasound to examine the heart’s chambers, valves, walls, and movement, while Doppler technology evaluates blood flow.
Holter monitoring provides a continuous recording of your pet’s heart rhythm for approximately 24 hours while they remain comfortably at home. This can help identify abnormal rhythms, investigate fainting episodes, or monitor treatment.
Depending on your pet’s condition, our cardio-respiratory services may also include advanced laboratory testing and imaging, oxygen therapy, nebulization, and continuous cardiac monitoring.
Internal medicine cases often require multiple diagnostic tools and, sometimes, collaboration between specialties. Our team works together to connect the pieces, explain what we’re finding, and create a treatment plan tailored to your pet.
Many internal medicine patients are referred to OPVMC by their primary care veterinarian. Once we receive your pet’s referral form and pertinent medical records, our Referral Coordinator will contact you to schedule a consultation with the appropriate specialty team.
Diagnostics or procedures are not always performed on the same day as the initial consultation. Your specialist will discuss recommended testing, treatment options, and an individualized estimate after evaluating your pet.
