At Orchard Park Veterinary Medical Center, anesthesia is more than simply putting a pet to sleep for a procedure. Our dedicated anesthesiology team creates individualized anesthesia and pain-management plans based on each patient’s health, age, condition, and procedure. OPVMC is proud to be the only veterinary practice in Western New York with a full-time, board-certified veterinary anesthesiologist, providing an exceptional level of oversight for patients throughout the hospital.
Our anesthesiology department is led by Dr. O’Donovan, DACVAA, whose specialized expertise supports patients undergoing surgery, dentistry, diagnostic imaging, emergency procedures, and other medical treatments.
Her role includes:
Having a dedicated anesthesiologist on our team allows anesthesia care to be tailored to each patient while allowing surgeons and other specialists to focus on their specific areas of expertise.
Every pet responds to anesthesia differently. Age, breed, underlying health conditions, medications, and the type of procedure can all affect how a patient should be anesthetized and monitored.
A board-certified anesthesiologist provides an additional level of expertise, particularly for senior pets, medically complex patients, and those undergoing advanced or lengthy procedures. Individualized protocols and careful monitoring help support patient safety, comfort, and recovery.
During anesthesia, our team uses advanced monitoring technology to continuously assess your pet’s vital functions. Depending on the procedure and patient’s needs, monitoring may include:
This ongoing monitoring allows our team to recognize changes quickly and make adjustments throughout the procedure.
Anesthesia care doesn’t end when the procedure is finished. Our team also focuses on pain management and recovery, using appropriate medications and monitoring to help keep your pet comfortable as they wake from anesthesia.
Our anesthesiology service supports departments throughout OPVMC, including Surgery, Emergency & Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Oncology, Neurology, Dentistry, and Diagnostic Imaging.
Dr. O’Donovan does not provide direct client consultations. As OPVMC’s in-house board-certified veterinary anesthesiologist, she develops individualized anesthesia and pain-management plans for patients within the hospital and works closely with our medical and surgical teams to provide safe, effective care.
