Neurologic conditions can be complex and sometimes difficult to diagnose. Our Orchard Park neurology vet team combines advanced diagnostic imaging with extensive neurological expertise to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles.
Our board-certified veterinary neurologist and neurosurgeon, Dr. Arielle Herberger, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology), provides specialized neurological care for dogs and cats, working closely with our other specialty and medical teams to develop individualized treatment plans.
Neurological symptoms can take many forms. Your pet may experience changes in their gait or coordination, weakness, difficulty standing, seizures, changes in behavior or awareness, pain, or other unusual movements.
Our neurologic evaluation begins with a detailed history and physical and neurological examination. By assessing your pet’s movement, reflexes, muscle tone, posture, and awareness, our team can determine whether the problem is neurological and identify the area of the nervous system most likely to be affected.
Accurate diagnosis is especially important when neurological disease affects delicate structures such as the brain and spinal cord. OPVMC offers onsite MRI and CT imaging, giving our specialists access to detailed images that can help identify abnormalities and guide treatment decisions.
Once your pet’s condition has been identified, our neurologist will discuss the treatment options that are most appropriate for their individual needs.
Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include:
For conditions requiring surgery, our neurology and surgical teams work together to provide coordinated care before, during, and after the procedure.
Neurology and neurosurgery cases are typically referred to OPVMC by a primary care veterinarian. Your veterinarian will provide our Orchard Park neurology vet with a referral and relevant medical records, after which our Referral Coordinator will contact you to schedule an initial consultation.
Diagnostics or procedures are not necessarily performed on the same day as the consultation. After evaluating your pet, the neurologist will discuss recommended testing, treatment options, and an individualized estimate with you.
If your pet is experiencing an immediate emergency, please seek emergency veterinary care. Our neurology and critical care teams can coordinate when urgent neurological evaluation or intervention is needed.
