Protect Your Pet From Fleas, Ticks & Heartworm

Parasites are more than an occasional nuisance. Fleas, ticks, and heartworms can cause discomfort, transmit serious diseases, and affect your pet’s overall health. At Orchard Park Veterinary Medical Center, we help you choose safe, effective parasite prevention based on your pet’s lifestyle, age, health, and risk of exposure.

Whether your pet spends most of their time indoors or loves exploring the outdoors, preventive care can help keep them protected.

Flea & Tick Prevention

Fleas and ticks can be found in grassy areas, wooded spaces, parks, and even around your own backyard. In Western New York, ticks can pose a risk to pets throughout much of the year, and some can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.

Fleas can also quickly become a problem for both your pet and your home. Even when adult fleas aren’t obvious, eggs and other stages of the flea life cycle may remain in the environment.

During your pet’s wellness visits, we’ll check for signs of parasites and discuss the preventive options that best fit their needs. If your pet already has fleas or ticks, we can also recommend an appropriate treatment plan.

Heartworm Prevention

Heartworm disease is caused by parasites transmitted through mosquito bites. In dogs, heartworm infection can cause serious damage to the heart and lungs and can become life-threatening if left untreated. Cats can also develop heartworm disease, although infection is less common and can be difficult to diagnose.

We recommend year-round heartworm prevention for many dogs, particularly those who travel to areas where heartworm is more prevalent. Dogs receiving regular prevention should also receive routine heartworm testing as recommended by our veterinary team.

Though heartworm disease is rare in cats, we’ll consider their lifestyle and potential exposure when discussing heartworm prevention.

Personalized Parasite Protection

There isn’t one preventive plan that’s right for every pet. We’ll consider your pet’s lifestyle, travel, outdoor exposure, and health history to create a practical prevention plan that protects them from the parasites most relevant to their individual needs.
